A planety szaleją, szaleją..... czyli "szyj i tnij" / And the planets go crazy, crazy... - "sew and cut".

My newest work is a result of fascination with Sonia Delaunay’s way of painting and the way of making quilts by Kit Vincent. In addition I repeat in my head a fragment of the song written by Maanam “And the planets go crazy, crazy…”, which is also the name of this quilt. This all makes me think that the season of Big Borrowing has starded in my atelier. The quilt is very big - its dimensions are 210 x 140 cm. I have been sewing it for over one and a half month. Before I’ve sewn it I’ve painted an image to understand the variations of colours better. This quilt is a gift. The new owner likes it very much.

This is how I made this quilt.
A cotton batting is the bottom layer of the quilt. I have put the rings cut out of colorful fabrics on the batting and sewed them on the batting so that the edges of the rings were overlapping. This is how the background looked like - you can see it on the left side of the picture.

Przypinałam je szpilkami do podłoża.

I put more and more layers of the fabrics, sometimes one sometimes more: there are places where you can find four layers. The pieces are rounded in the shape but I wasn’t very precise when I was cutting them. I pinned them with the pins to the bottom layer.

I quilted without taking the pins out. My fingers were scratched!

The next part was cutting. I cut the layers of fabrics out so that the pieces on the top layer were smaller than the ones on the layers under.
There are fragments where there are so many layers of fabrics that you can hardly see the bottom layer.

There were moments when I wasn’t happy with the dominant colour and I sewed additional layer on. The fabrics are almost 100% monochrome, I used some taffeta and brocade. You can also find some cotton, linen, jersey… anything I could find in my atelier. I promised myself to count the different kinds of fabrics I used to make this quilt, I think there are at least one hundred.
I really like this quilt. When I look at it I can almost see how it moves, swirls, shines, twitches… I am definitely make more planets like this. I want to make one in the shades of white, I will name it “Blizzard”. Will I sew it? Time will show. Now I am absorbed in the new equipment of my School of Patchwork, the sewing machine Juki TL-2200QVP.
